Hiking in Gunma

2023/06/10 [Sat]

Hi all, June here. Today I worked the lunch shift with Quentin, one of our work/stay guests. A Frenchman, he spent the last few months here in Japan studying Japanese and traveling. He loves hiking, just like me. During his stay in Gunma, he’s already been to nearby Mt. Haruna, to eat udon at Mizusawa and then climb to Ikaho to bath in the hot springs.

It’s rainy season now, so not great weather for hiking. I told him once rainy season is over, he should try climbing Mt. Tanigawa. It’s one of Gunma’s taller mountains, but you can take a ropeway up part way. From there there’s an intermediate trail through the forest and then up along the ridge line. From the top of the mountain, you can see beautiful views of the other peaks along the range. It’s one of my favorite hikes around here. After coming down you can stop for a bath at one of the hot springs in Minakami, the town at the base of the mountain. It makes for a great day trip from here. I hope Quentin and our other guests will get to try it this summer!

P.S. Matoi’s parent company’s dog was here to chill on the patio today. That’s who’s in the top photo with us. Look how cute she is!
