End-of-Year Reflections and Car Tourism in Gunma

Hi everyone, it’s close to the end of the year. How have you been spending your time? Relaxing? Traveling home to visit family? Have you done anything fun recently? I’ve been living in Gunma for almost two months now, and many of our guests mention that they came here for car tourism because they love Initial D. I’m not really a car guy, but I’m always impressed by people who can hear a car engine and identify the brand and model. It’s like a superpower! Back home in Miami, I knew quite a few car enthusiasts, and anytime they talked about cars, I had no idea what they were saying. But it was always fun to listen and learn.

The Appeal of Eurobeat and Initial D

While I’ve never watched Initial D, I know it became popular in the West partly because of its Eurobeat-heavy soundtrack. What’s Eurobeat, you ask? It’s a genre of electronic dance music that originated in Italy in the late 1970s and has a British variant as well. It features a fast tempo, catchy melodies, and lots of synth sounds. I might not be 100% knowledgeable about it, so feel free to correct me if we meet. Like all music genres, Eurobeat has evolved over the years and became popular in Japan around the 1980s. Keeping its Italian disco roots, it evolved into a staple for club music in Japan. For fans of this genre, it’s no surprise they’ve heard of Initial D at some point, whether for the love of cars, music, drifting, or just enjoying anime.

My Connection to Initial D

For me, it was a mix of Eurobeat and living in Gunma that got me interested. How about you? When did you first hear about Initial D? Was it through music, cars, or something else?

Exploring Gunma’s Famous Mountain Path

I’ve been wanting to visit this mountain path due to everyone’s recommendations. Recently, a guest gifted me a model of the car that the main characters drive in the show. It was such a kind gesture, motivating me to drive around the area. So one night, when I was free the next day, I drove to the Touge with my toy car. The drive up the mountain was beautiful, and I was surprised to see many others driving around as well. Maybe in the past, many drivers made a pilgrimage here to try drifting. There are signs like speed bumps at the bottom, the more dangerous part to drive, and guardrails showing the aftermath of some unfortunate accidents. Many cars I saw were driving respectfully and within the speed limit, so I did the same. I had to stop many times to take pictures of the stunning scenery. You can really see the stars from the top of the mountain, so a clear summer day must be amazing. I plan to come back and stay at the onsens to get better photos of the stars. Do you enjoy stargazing? If not, give it a shot and look up at the stars.

Although it was a bit cloudy that night, I was happy with the pictures I took and enjoyed the experience. I will for sure come back. How about you? Have you visited before? Will you come back to visit Gunma? Or Japan in general. Perhaps you plan on visiting in the future? Whatever your answer might be, do take your time to explore different areas off the beaten path. Those will end up being some of the best stories to tell in the future.
